Annie and Ben Sussman are a middle-aged couple living on the Upper West Side of New York City. Ben is a cardiologist with a busy practice, while Annie has just retired from 25 years of teaching writing. Their son, Alex, has moved to California, and they are experiencing their first joys of freedom since they were first married 30 years ago.
With the demands of a full-time job behind her, Annie is committed to a long-lost dream of becoming a playwright. She has written a play and is just starting to get some momentum with submissions to contests and festivals when tragedy strikes. Her mother, Rose, has taken a bad fall and must come to live with Ben and Annie. Annie's curtain is about to be pulled down right in the middle of her second act.
This play addresses themes of parental responsibility, moral dilemmas, and midlife issues.
Annie Sussman: 50-60 old Italian-American woman. Retired school teacher.
Ben Sussman: 50-60, Annie's husband. Jewish "Docta".
Rose Benanti: Over eighty, Annie's mother.
Joey Benanti: 45-50, Annie's Brother.
Macho, Jersey Italian-American. Works highway construction.
Karen Benanti: 40's. Joey's wife. Hip, good-looking, Jersey Girl. Works as a salesgirl at Macy's.

Chris Sherman is an accomplished playwright whose works have been staged and recognized across the country. Her writing credits include JACK: A Musical Fantasy (book and lyrics), which received a full production at The Theater of Universal Images in Newark, NJ, in collaboration with The Henry Street Settlement, with excerpts performed at Lincoln Center Out of Doors.
Her play THE INFERNO was featured in Abington Theater’s Around the Table reading series (2021) in New York City, was a semi-finalist in the Screencraft Playwriting Contest, and was selected for the 2020 New York Theater Festival. LIFE ALERT had a full production at eMBer Theater in Columbus, Ohio, in November 2021, while MALADIES won Best Play in the CreateTheater/Prism Stage Co. New Works Festival. Her latest work, THE MOTHERS, is currently in development with table readings through CreateTheater.
In addition to her playwriting, Sherman is the Artistic Director and Founder of The Newburyport Community Players in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Her humor writing has appeared in A View from the Kitchen Window, a weekly column published in The Newburyport Daily News (2000-2003), as well as in The Penguin Book of Italian-American Humor(edited by Regina Barreca) with her essay How to Marry an Italian American Man. Her essays have also been featured in The Villager and The West Villager newspapers.
